Dale Carnegie’s book is the classic in the field. There is reason why people still read it to this day (70+ years). So, do read it. I still read it at least once a year.

Books marked with a single * (nos. 3,4,5,7,8) are required reading. Students are to submit their end-of-semester reports base on one of them. You are required to subscribe to one book and work with 3 partners to collectively read the books during the semester but finish your own report.
Book 5 is listed but not as required reading. It is for those that really want to touch every perspective of communication, and you will benefit greatly if you choose to read it. Since nobody seems to know how to do it right. If you know the right way to do it, you will save yourself a lot of seemingly irrecoverable mistakes in life.
Book 8 is a starting book that will help you approach the idea ‘think outside the box’. It is chosen as an extension for ‘empathy’ to connect you to the world that you will be stepping into after college.
Book 10 is a book on methodology for scientific research. You are advised to read it to build sound logic for your reasoning.
Book 11 is another book that you should read so that you learn another aspect of influencing others. The gist is to understand the weakness of human reasoning to help you detect your own flaws and leverage the common flaws to further your goal. This book is meaningful for the ambitious. You decide if you are ambitious.
Books 10 and 11 are very helpful if you are interested in building a clear and logical head capable of true independent reasoning/thinking instead of being a mocking bird capable of nothing but repeating others.
Ed Catmull wrote a wonderful book on how to manage a whole group of talented, gifted people, stressing on how to help each other to do and be their best and together create incredible things. This is the book that I think serves as a great start and an excellent companion to the Carnegie’s book for the rest of your life.

Standing assignments:
These are discussed in class. I know many of you will not do it, but for those self-starters, here they are:
1. News Emails from NY Times or any major newspaper, periodicals. Just pick one every day and read the summary as well as the full story. Try to understand how the editors summarize the story. Identify how they pick out the main point, the assumptions used, and the intended target audience. And discover what can be treated as secondary – some of the details that you may consider crucial. These are of great value to you.
2. Listen to your life. Just be observing, pick out things happening around you, to tell it as a story. Try to tell it in as few sentences as possible to convey a point or two. Consciously determine/infer the assumption, the emphasis, and the details given up. Maybe even try a couple of ways to tell the same story to see how different the stories can be. Put it down on paper after you digest them all. Pick one or two in a week to share in FB.
3. In-classroom critiques. Pick 3 of any speakers at the session, including Barry, and jot down what you like, dislike, the assumptions used, and the perspective represented. Try to come up with a different perspective given the one that you already jotted down.
